JARED FOUND HARPER fussing with the makeshift cemetery. She wore a hoodie and her cheeks were pink from the cold. She didn’t look in his direction when he stepped on the porch and Jared knew she was angry. That didn’t stop him from approaching.

“You know I love you, right?”

As far as openings go, Harper had heard worse. “I love you, too.”

“I don’t want to fight.”

“Then don’t tell me what to do.”

“That’s not really how I look at it.” Jared shuffled closer to Harper and grabbed one side of a fake tombstone so he could help her line it up. “I don’t want to order you around. That’s not what I’m about. I hope you know that.”

Harper lifted her eyes. “What are you about?”

“Protecting you.”

“I’m not in danger. How is it you think I’m in danger?”

“I don’t know, Heart, but the idea of you going after a murderer doesn’t fill me with visions of unicorns and dancing bears.”

Harper wrinkled her forehead. “I don’t even know what that means.”

“I worry about you.” Jared decided honesty was the best policy and told the truth. “I admire you. I think you’re talented. The things you do are amazing. That doesn’t mean I can just sit back and let you do something crazy.”

“What makes you think I’m going to do something crazy?”

Jared smirked. “I’ve met you. Sometimes you can’t help yourself.”

“I’m not going to do anything crazy.” Harper snagged Jared’s coat sleeve. “I promise. I just want to help Henry.”

“You always want to help. Your heart is so big that you can’t help yourself from diving in and helping before you’ve considered the ramifications of what might happen.”

“And what might happen?”

“Well, for starters, Henry was poisoned.”

“I know. He was murdered. I believe I’m the one who told you that.”

Jared bit the inside of his cheek to keep from laughing. “I thought you weren’t going to say ‘I told you so.’”

“I forgot.”

“That’s okay. You’ve earned it. I gave Mel a big, fat ‘I told you so’ on your behalf when I heard.”

Harper visibly brightened. “You did?”

“I did. I was happy for you that you were right.”

“Cool.”

“I was unhappy for myself, though, because I knew that meant you would get even more involved in this case,” Jared said. “Heart, I can’t stop myself from fearing that one day you’ll stumble across a body and get into more trouble than you can get yourself out of. I can’t help it. I worry.”

“I think that’s fair.” Harper adopted a pragmatic tone. “The thing is, I worry about you, too. You’re a police officer. You could go down in the line of duty because that’s part of your job description.”

Jared balked. “I can’t change who I am.”

“I can’t either. The difference is, I accept that about you. You don’t seem to be able to do the same for me.”

Jared opened his mouth to argue and then snapped it shut as he considered the statement. “You’re right.”

Harper was ready to push her argument further until he stunned her with the two simple words.
